EXPO COSMOPOLITAN RENAISSANCE

EXPO COSMOPOLITAN RENAISSANCE – FROM 29 OCTOBER 2022 TO 15 JANUARY 2023

This autumn, Knokke-Heist welcomes Koen Vanmechelen, best known for his Cosmopolitan Chicken Project and a recent guest at the Uffizi in Florence (Italy).

Since the earliest beginnings of his artistry, Koen Vanmechelen has been asking questions about the future of our species: how should humans move forward? How can we as humans coexist sustainably with other species while respecting the environment of even the smallest creatures?

According to the artist, today – more than ever – there is a need for a cosmopolitan renaissance. He demonstrates this conviction in this exhibition through drawings, paintings, glass and marble sculptures, videos and (living) installations. Time and again, Vanmechelen combines various basic ingredients from his artistic universe into surprising stories.

For this exhibition, Koen Vanmechelen is accompanied by art historian Jo Coucke.

BIOGRAPHY KOEN VANMECHELEN

Belgian artist Koen Vanmechelen (°1965, Sint-Truiden) made an international name for himself with his Cosmopolitan Chicken Project (CCP), a unique artistic-scientific project he launched in the late 1990s in which he crosses national breeds of chickens into ‘cosmopolitan chickens’. At the heart of the project is neither the chicken nor the egg, but the crossing process and the diversity that results.

The same diversity also characterises the other animal species, farms, projects and foundations that make up the artist’s work. Like a modern Uomo Universale, Vanmechelen fuses art, nature and knowledge, reaching out to anyone and anything that can help him break down boundaries in his journey.
